Voice-over-IP

Nowadays, the advanced technology, "Voice over IP" (VoIP), allows us to use IP packets to carry voice streaming for transmission. Voice streaming packets can route through Internet from one place to another just like making a call from a caller (originating) side to a called (destination) side. A VoIP caller can make a voice call over Internet, that subsequently routes through a VoIP gateway and a remote local PSTN (Public Switching Telephone Network) to reach the destination of a PSTN telephone. VoIP also allows us to call from one PSTN telephone to another PSTN telephone through a pair of end-to-end localised gateways, which are directly connected through Internet. By using this concept, we can make a call over Internet to a long-distant destination without long-distance toll charge.

For broadband access, a VoIP gateway, in general, is able to support at least 4 voice circuits simultaneously with acceptable voice quality. A VoIP gateway can work without attaching to a PC.
